In wellness lessons, the Center for Living and Learning’s vocational trainees, are focused on learning teamwork, decision-making, and professional skills while exploring their own personal “hero’s journey”. These discussions help build confidence, support growth in communication and critical thinking, and foster a better understanding of how their choices impact both themselves and others. In mental health lessons, the vocational trainees are learning about emotional regulation and processes individuals use to manage and respond to their emotional experiences in appropriate and adaptive ways. Learning skills to regulate emotions means that, instead of acting impulsively, we are able to make thought-out choices.

The trainees have been baking up healthy snacks in cooking group, including baked broccoli cheese balls and cinnamon cranberry breakfast bites. In art group, they are painting notecards, which they use to write encouraging notes to Meals on Wheels recipients to accompany their meal deliveries. In reading group, vocational trainees are engaging with various topics, including Shakespeare, sports and The Dream Team, and enjoyed the mystery and critical thinking inspired by Agatha Christie. These activities help strengthen comprehension skills, expand their perspectives, and connect literature lessons to real-life experiences.
