This Month in Vocational Lessons, April 2025

The Center for Living and Learning’s vocational trainees wrapped up their unit on personal finance this month and are meeting one on one with Center staff to create personal budgets. They are also learning about growth mindset, fixed mindset and neuroplasticity. By applying growth mindset, they are evaluating difficult emotions and how to respond in healthier ways. Additionally, they are studying attributes of a positive mindset and reflecting on how to apply these to their individual workplace challenges. The trainees have continued learning and practicing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy concepts. We specifically focused on understanding emotions by recognizing the thoughts that are associated with them. Thoughts influence our perception of the world, so it’s important to learn how to recognize our thoughts. Once awareness is developed, then we practice reframing unhelpful thoughts to thoughts that are more beneficial.

In cooking class, the trainees have been baking up more healthy snacks, most recently delicious broccoli cheese balls. In art class, they are creating beautiful ceramic pieces, including bowls and vases, to be sold at the Center’s Spring Market on May 2. In April, we read Jack London’s, To Build a Fire. The story is set in the harsh, wintery landscape of the Yukon, describing one man’s perilous journey on the trail. London’s ability to clearly describe the environment left us all feeling the icy chill of the protagonist’s dangerous circumstances. The trainees discussed various lessons learned from the tale, including the perils of arrogance, the importance of respecting nature and the value of companionship.

Be sure to join us for the Center for Living and Learning’s Spring Market next week and check out the results of all the trainees’ hard work in our garden and market work programs! The market is Friday, May 2, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., at the Center, 1979 Old Hillsboro Road in Franklin. A variety of springtime products will be for sale, including plant starters, flower bouquets, seed bombs, spices, potpourri, artwork, lip balm, hand salve, lollipops and dog treats — all made with love by the Center’s vocational trainees. Proceeds go directly back into the Center’s programming
